Natural science and human science

Teacher: Natural sciences examine what is made by nature. Human sciences examine what is made by humans.

Student: Natural sciences are made by nature. Human sciences are made by humans.

T: No, natural sciences are not made by nature, they examine nature.

S: Natural sciences examine sciences that are made by humans.

T: No, natural sciences examine things that are made by nature. You don’t find the sciences in nature.

S: And human sciences are created by humans.

T: All sciences are created by humans. It’s just the thing that human sciences study that is made by humans, too.

S: And natural science is made by nature.

T: There is no science that is made by nature.

S: Ok. Natural sciences examine sciences that are not made by nature. Human sciences examine nature made by humans.

T: Try to understand. A science is not made by nature. Nature is just the thing that they study.

S: Natural sciences study the thing that is made by natural sciences.

T: No, the science does not study what is made by science.

S: Natural sciences study sciences made by humans.

T: They do not study the science but nature.

S: Natural sciences study nature made by humans.

T: No, they examine nature made by… nature. But the science is made by humans.

S: Nature examines sciences that are made by humans.

T: Nature does not examine anything. It’s the science that examines.

S: Natural sciences examine nature.

T: Good! Finally you got it.

S: And human sciences examine humans made by human sciences.

T: I think we have to be more concrete. Can you name a few natural sciences?

S: Mountains, water, animals…

T: These are not sciences. They are what the sciences examine.

S: Sir, you’re confusing me.

T: What’s so difficult?

S: Natural sciences are found in nature. Like rocks.

T: Is a rock a science?

S: Yes, it’s called geology.

T: Geology is the science. But a rock is not a science.

S: It is. Geology is the rock science.

T: The science is geology, not the rock.

S: But how can I distinguish them if both are found in nature?
